In June , a brief pamphlet titled The Selling of Joseph was published in Boston. It’s considered the first abolitionist tract to be published in what’s now the United States. Authored by Salem witch trial judge Samuel Sewall, the three page pamphlet uses biblical references to argue that enslaving another person could never be considered moral. Listen to find out what motivated Sewall to write the tract, how his peers in Boston reacted to it, and what its effect was on the wider world. In light of recent events, we’ll also consider the current debate around statues and their removal.

In September, Mary Ayer Parker of Andover came to trial in Salem Massachusetts, suspected of witchcraft. During her examination she was asked, "How long have ye been in the snare of the devil?" She responded, "I know nothing of it." Many people confessed under the pressure of the court of Oyer and Terminer, but she asserted they had the wrong woman. "There is another woman of the same name in Andover,"1 she proclaimed. At the time, no one paid much attention. Mary Ayer Parker was convicted and hanged by the end of the month. For mine own part, it pleased God to visit me with a sore shock that incapacitated me much for my business for many months, viz by a fit of a Lethargy. But the Lord was pleased to appear signally for me, and when some means that seemed necessary were neglected and omitted, naturlig eller utan tillsats in the hand of Providence supplyed the want of them. After inom had laid two nights and one day taking little meddelande of any thing, at my awaking after the second night my head was all broke out with heats to that degree that it was equivalent to a Blister plaister, which Physicians judge was the means of preserving my life.
