From this humble beginning, Clara Mae Leach Adams-Ender rose to achieve the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. Army and led over 22,000 nurses in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. General Clara Adams-Ender to Present Memoir, ‘My Rise to the Stars,’ Outlining Life Journey
To celebrate Westfield State University’s 185 anniversary and recognize Women’s History Month, the University will host General Clara Adams-Ender for a book presentation and signing of her memoir, My Rise to the Stars: How a Sharecropper’s Daughter Became an Army General. In the book, Adams-Ender, narrates her ascent throughout academia, nursing, and the United States Army along with various accomplishments throughout her life. The event will take place on Thursday, March 21 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., at University Hall.

Clara Adams-Ender (née Leach; born July 11, 1939) is a retired United States Army officer who served as Chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps from September 1987 to August 1991. She was the first woman to receive her master's degree in military arts and sciences from the United States Army Command and General Staff College. She is also the first African-American nurse corps officer to graduate from the United States Army War College. When she retired, in 1993, she was serving as commanding officer of Fort Belvoir, in Fairfax County, Virginia. After retirement, in 2001 she published a memoir, My Rise to the Stars: How a Sharecropper's Daughter Became an Army General.
