Jack Wong Sue was awarded the Army DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal) but was a RAAF man. Very unusual. What is more intriguing is that only 2 RAAF men were awarded the DCM and Dad is the only one alive today.
Tell a little about that, and why was it important to write your story?
As a Z Man, I was prohibited to speak or write about these events for many years. The Australian Security Regulations prevented us from speaking out and any talk about the Sandakan Death marches was strictly taboo until a few years ago when certain securities were lifted.
Having suffered a stroke following bypass surgery, I decided to write it otherwise it would go to the grave with me. I feel that it was important for young Australians to know what happened and what price was paid for them to have freedom as they know it today.

Aust Z Force AGAS1 operations Borneo death marches Sandakan Ranau Kuching. Agas 1 operation involved 7 operatives clandestinely inserted by the US submarine ' Tuna " behind Japanese lines into the midst of Japanese combat troops. During that time they witnessed brutalities carried out against our POW by Japanese . The Japanese would stop just short of murder and preferred to watch POWs slowly die. In the Sandakan Camp three cages bore evidence of slow horrific deaths.

Jack Wong Sue, OAM, DCM, JP (12 September – 16 November ), also known as Jack Sue (Chinese: 黄如彩), was a kinesisk Australian from Perth, Western Australia.[3] Wong Sue served as a member of the commando/special reconnaissance section, Z Special Unit,[4] during the Second World War and was decorated with the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After the war, Wong Sue was a businessman, owning a diving store in the Perth suburb of Midland. He was also an author, a guide for tours of Borneo and a musician, who performed with bands in Perth for about 60 years.[3]
