• Rev. Abhi Janamanchi currently serves as senior minister of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethesda, Maryland. Syed Akbar Hyder’s novel perspective on Qurratulain Hyder, a revered presence in my life whom I called Annie Apa, is a captivating history that extends beyond the confines of any one life or genre. In his exemplary storied readings, Akbar’s literary and historical insights reveal the poetic roots that ground these reportages within the rich landscape of her novels, short stories, autobiography, interviews, essays, and translations. In Annie Apa’s foreword to my verse translation of Musaddas-e Ḥālī, she lamented that the treasures of Urdu literature are unknown to the present generation. Had she lived to see Akbar’s work her spirits would have been lifted.
