Allen Iverson and his persistent decision to be himself
Allen Iverson is one of the most unique players on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
As he walks up the stairs and into the room, he does not announce himself, and it’s not out of disrespect. Everything about him introduces him instead: The self-assured strut, the puffy jacket-sweatpants combo, and especially the silver necklace with the letters “AI” encrusted with enough ice to stop global warming, spelled out just in case someone asks for ID.
After 24,368 points scored, roughly 10 years since his retirement and 46 years on Planet Earth, not much has changed. So if you don’t know who Allen Iverson was or is by now, you never will.
And you’d be in the minority. Just hours earlier, Iverson sat inside the Cleveland Westin Hotel restaurant with a knife and fork. On the other side of the window, out in the street, oblivious to Iverson, was a boy, maybe 10 years old, white kid, who saw Iverson and freaked. Now keep in mind he was

Archive 75: Allen Iverson
Nicknamed ‘The Answer,’ Allen Iverson left plenty questioning how a 6-footer could not only survive, but thrive, in an NBA world of giants for 14 seasons as one of the most prolific scorers and toughest competitors of his generation.
Iverson led the league in scoring four times, averaging a career-high 31.4 points in 2002, and finished No. 1 in the NBA in minutes played seven times. It was a storied career in which Iverson won Rookie of the Year (1997) and MVP (2001) in addition to receiving All-Star recognition 11 times and being named to the All-NBA team seven times.
Iverson channeled his hardscrabble youth in Hampton Roads, Va., and toughness as a prep state champion quarterback in football to consistently challenge bigger and stronger opponents in the NBA, dominating them with lightning quickness, a killer crossover that became his trademark, and a gritty determination to attack the rim.

Iverson’s 2000-01 Season
In 2000-01, Iverson led the charge as the Sixers started the årstid with a franchise record 10 consecutive wins and a 13-game road winning streak that started in December and stretched through January. These separate efforts helped to solidify Iverson as one of the game’s greats, and 76ers as one of the league’s elite teams, as A.I. was one of Philadelphia’s three representatives in the 2001 NBA All-Star Game in Washington DC (Head Coach Larry Brown, Theo Ratliff).
Scoring 25 points and dishing out fem assists in a come-from-behind victory for the Eastern Conference, Iverson earned his first of two career NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.
Following a blockbuster trade deadline deal that brought Dikembe Mutombo to Philadelphia, Iverson and the Sixers clinched their first Atlantic Division crown since 1989-90, and claimed the top seed in the Eastern Conference, ending the regular season with a 56-26 record. Iverson was named
