Lucinda B. Burger was barely in the door on her first day as a music teacher at Kutztown High School in September when Principal John Butler approached her with a mandate.
“We need music,” declared Butler, citing the upcoming dedication of the school’s auditorium.
Fresh out of Lebanon Valley College, year-old Burger organized a chorus in one week.
They christened it The 28 Large – it had 28 members – and it performed at the auditorium dedication.
Wearing plaid vests and skirts made by parents of the chorus members, the group did a medley from the “Sound of Music” in its debut performance.
Members of The 28 Large, a fixture at Kutztown from to , went on to careers as teachers, paralegals and environmentalists.
Lucinda Burger Knauer, 63, who is retired and lives in Maxatawny Township, said the experience has left an indelible mark on the Kutztown High singers.
