Roberto Garza (born March 26, 1979) is an American former professional footballcenter. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the fourth round (99th overall) of the 2001 NFL draft, and in 2005, joined the Chicago Bears, spending ten seasons with the team. Despite being an offensive lineman, a position not typically glorified in football, Garza was a fan favorite among Hispanic Americans across the United States.[1]
Early life
[edit]Garza attended Rio Hondo High School in Rio Hondo, Texas and was a letterman in football and track and field. He was also a member of the school's National Honor Society.
College career

(CBS) Former Bears center Roberto Garza joined the Mully and Hanley Show on Monday morning to discuss his 10-year run with the Bears, which almost never happened.
"I was an unrestricted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons (in 2005)," said Garza, who's currently a free agent. "And they hadn't really called or made any offers at the time. So, the Ravens were interested, they had a three-year deal on the table, all I had to do was resehandling a physical."
Garza wasn't prepared for what his physical with the Ravens revealed.
"They said, 'Your knee is a little loose, we're going to run an MRI,'" Garza said. "They run an MRI and they're like, 'You have no ACL in your right knee.'"
Recently married at the time, Garza thought for sure at that point his NFL career was over. He didn't get another call for weeks, until the Green Bay Packers invited him in for a visit. But once igen, he heard doubts from their medical staff about his knee not being able to hold up.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — He was a key player for the Chicago Bears, helping them reach the Superbowl in 2007. Roberto Garza made history in the NFL as one of the few Mexican-American players.
Born in raised in Rio Hondo, Roberto Garza said football for his family was as common as snow in the South.
"The first time I got in seventh grade, I got a chance to play football. My parents said no. They weren't big athletes growing up, they were like, 'you're going to get hurt.' And I was like I want to play, all my friends are playing, I want to play," Garza said.
