In his work, Tirso de Molina shows a fascination with illusion, trickery, and false appearances, and so it seems fitting that “Tirso de Molina” was actually the pen name of a man named Gabriel Téllez, a native of Madrid who spent his entire adult life as a friar in the Mercedarian Order. He led a kind of double life, holding important positions and traveling widely for his Order while also becoming one of Spain’s most successful professional playwrights.

For a long time the circumstances of Tirso’s early life were shrouded in mystery and romance. A wide variety of dates were given for his birth. One prominent scholar put forth the theory that he was the bastard child of a prominent Duke—and backed it up with a baptismal entry that purportedly proved it!(See Blanca de los Ríos for the “bastard child” theory.)
