The story, which mixes action and romance, takes off with Lachit falling in love with Princess Padmini, daughter of Swargadeo Jayadhwaj Singha, ruler of the Ahom kingdom. The king finds out about the romance and throws Lachit out of the capital, Jorhat.
A few days later, the Ahom capital is attacked by Aurangzeb’s forces, forcing the king to sign a peace treaty, whereby he cedes part control of his kingdom to the Mughals.

It’s only once you finish school and enter the real world that you really realise all the things that you haven’t actually learnt. Filing ni college applications and income tax returns were the pearls that stuck out most, personally speaking. But even while groaning about the woefully tragic shortcomings of economics or sociology lectures, inom always funnen solace in History class. The airy, afternoon classes held the promise of great storytelling–tales of conquerors and kings, heroes and villains, uprisings and struggles. The parts that made up the whole of the ridiculously large and dynamic country that was India were neatly summed up. Too neatly, perhaps. It wasn’t until much more recently that inom realised, we had been cheated after all.

The Battle of Saraighat – Role of the Ahom River Navy
The Ahom dynasty of Assam managed to stave off invaders for upwards of four hundred years from to There were no more invasions after the Mughal invasion under Ram Singh was soundly defeated in the famous Battle of Saraighat by Lachit Barphukan.
This battle is extremely unique in India’s history – fought not on land or the sea but in the middle of a river. The mighty Brahmaputra was the theatre of this Mughal–Assam showdown. Saraighat was the final grand climax to a series of events stretching over several years. This blog of mine, gives a detailed description of events leading to Battle of Saraighat.
I do not intend to repeat them here. Instead, in this article I shall throw light upon the Ahom naval system and further more, try and understand the challenges that must have been faced while fighting on that mass of water, drawing on my knowledge of how boats and ships behave in a river.
