    Judy Holliday (born Judith Tuvim, June 21, – June 7, ) was an American actress, comedian and singer.[1]

    She began her career as part of a nightclub act before working in Broadway plays and musicals. Her success as Billie Dawn in the stage production of Born Yesterday led to her being cast in the film version for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. She was known for her performance on Broadway in the musical Bells Are Ringing, winning a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and reprising her role in the film adaptation.

    In , Holliday was called to testify before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee to answer claims she was associated with communism.

    Judith Holliday (born Judith Tuvim) was born on June 21, in New York City. Her parents were Abraham and Helen Tuvim. Judy Holliday’s uncle was noted Jewish- American writer Joseph Gollomb, her mother taught piano in New York City, and her father was a journalist for the Yiddish- language press.

    Holliday grew up in Sunnyside, Queens. As a student at Julia Richman High School, Holliday wrote a play (which she then directed and starred in) and edited the school newspaper. After being rejected by Yale Drama School, Holliday took a job as a switchboard operator at the Mercury Theater, then under the supervision of Orson Welles. She lasted six months. 

    Holliday wanted to be a writer and director, but settled for acting, a compromise made by many talented women in the s and s. While on vacation in the Catskills in , Holliday met and became friends with borscht belt comedian Adolph Green. Later that same year, Holliday invited Green, Betty C
