Eartha Mae Kitt (née Keith; January 17, – December 25, ) was an American singer and actress. She was known for her highly distinctive singing style and her recordings of "C'est si bon" and the Christmasnovelty song "Santa Baby".
Kitt began her career in and appeared in the original Broadway theatre production of the musical Carib Song. In the early s, Kitt had six US Top 30 entries, including "Uska Dara" () and "I Want to Be Evil" (). Her other recordings include the UK Top 10 song "Under the Bridges of Paris" (), "Just an Old Fashioned Girl" () and "Where Is My Man" (). Early life and career
[change | change source]Kitt was born on a cotton plantation in the town of North, in South Carolina, where she spent the first 7 years of her life. At the age of 8, she moved with her family to Harlem in New York City, eventually attending the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan and, in , joining the Katherine Dunham Dance Company. With the Dunham troupe, Kitt performed in Egypt, France, Greece, Turkey, New York, Las Vegas and Hollywood, and eventually secured her first movie acting role in the rulle, Casbah. For her many outstanding accomplishments, Kitt was honored in with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[1] She provided the voice of the character Yzma in the animated film, The Emper
