Janet Bostwick: The Woman and Her Legacy
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Her name is synonymous with so many firsts, and her reputation is forever tied to national development and the advancement of women.
A model politician and pioneer for women’s rights and equality across the region, Dame Janet Bostwick took the plight of women to the highest levels on the world stage, from the United Nations to CARICOM nations.
Dame Janet was also first woman elected to Parliament.
Her legal profession started off as a stenographer in the legal department. She then moved up through the ranks and was called to The Bahamas Bar in April 1971 and served as a Crown Prosecutor from 1972 to 1974.
Bostwick is a former acting magistrate and served as president of The Bahamas Bar Association.
The former senator, also severed as an Attorney General, Minister of Justice and Immigration and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
All these successes in politics she attributes to her strong Christian faith.

She’ll tell you unabashedly it wasn’t easy. Not because she wasn’t equipped or qualified but because she was a woman. Not just any woman, but a black woman.
Dame Janet Bostwick, born in 1939, became the first woman elected to parliament. She was the first woman to serve as attorney general and first woman to serve as acting prime minister.

Biography
[edit]Janet Gwennett Musgrove was born in Nassau to Nick and Lois Musgrove. In 1957, she began working as a stenographer in the Legal Department of the Bahamas and by 1961 had become the private secretary of the Attorney General.[2]
Between 1967 and 1971, she served as an Administrative Officer of the Legal Department and attended law school,[2] earning her membership to the Bahamas Bar Association in 1971.[3] Through 1974, she served as Crown Counsel[4] simultaneously serving as Crown Prosecutor, leaving the government service in 1975 for private law practice.
