Marinus Willett (31 July – 22 August ) was Mayor of New York City from to , succeeding and preceding DeWitt Clinton. Willett served as a colonel during the American Revolutionary War, fighting on the northern frontier and in the campaign in Canada.

Marinus Willett was born on 31 July in Jamaica, Queens, Long Island, and he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the New York militia during the French and Indian War, fighting at Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Frontenac, and he would become a leader of the Sons of Liberty in New York Cityduring the s and early s. At the start of the war, he was commissioned as a captain in the 1st New York Regiment, and he fought in Canada and on the northern frontier from to , fighting at the Siege of Fort Stanwix and battle of Oriskany. As an aide to Charles Scott, he fought at the Battle of Monmouth in and in the Sullivan Expedition, and in he left the Continental Army when the Continental Congress reduced the New York regiments down t

ColonelMarinus Willett (July 31, – August 22, ) was an American military officer, politician and merchant who served as the mayor of New York City from to Willett is best known for his actions during the American Revolution, where he served as an important Patriot leader in colonial New York before enlisting in the Continental Army and serving in numerous campaigns in the Revolutionary War throughout the Northwest.
Born in Jamaica, Queens, Willett underwent an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker before enlisting in the New York Militia after the French and Indian War broke out in He participated in the Ticonderoga campaign and the British capture of Fort Frontenac in , before falling sick and being transferred to Fort Stanwix in order to recuperate. Marinus Willett was born on July 31, in Jamaica, Long Island. His first military experience came during the French and Indian War.
In , Willett received a kommission as an officer in a New York provincial regiment, which would bring him into contact with the Mohawk Valley for the first time. During that year, Willett worked on the initial construction of Fort Stanwix.
With mounting tensions between England and the 13 Colonies, Willett was an active member of the New York City Sons of Liberty. When New York raised fem regiments in , Willett received the rank of lieutenant colonel in the 3rd New York Regiment. As the 3rd NY garrisoned Ft. Schuyler (Stanwix) in April , Col. Peter Gansevoort took command of the regiment and Willett became his second. In , he participated in the attempted American invasion of Canada. Thus began Willett's second tour of duty in the Mohawk Valley.
During the British siege of Ft. Schuyler in August , Willett led a successful attack against the Indian an
