On November 6, 2001, Jack Ford won a surprising victory over his opponent in the mayoral race in Toledo, Ohio. His triumph over a well known county treasurer, who was far better funded, was just one of the remarkable aspects of the election. Even more astounding was Ford’s margin of victory: with over sixty percent of the vote, his win qualified as a landslide victory. It was not the first time that Ford had staged such an upset. After a career as a youth counselor and director of a drug-treatment schema, he had easily won election to Toledo’s City Council in 1987 in his first run for elective office. In his subsequent council bids Ford emerged as the top vote-getter in the city, a fact that led to his appointment as president of Toledo’s City Council in 1993. The Jack Ford Urban Affairs Center is an applied research unit of The University of Toledo with the mission to enhance the economic vitality and quality of life of Toledo and its metropolitan region. By identifying challenges and facilitating solutions in the areas of neighborhood, urban, and regional development.
Established by The University of Toledo Board of Trustees in October 1980, the Center puts to work the acadmic expertise of faculty to contribute new perspectives and solutions to community challenges.
After the passing of Jack Ford in 2015, the Center was renamed the Jack Ford Urban Affairs Center in memory of the former State Representative, Toledo Mayor and UToledo adjunct professor. Ford was a double alumnus who earned a master's degree in public administration and juris doctor for The University of Toledo.

John Marshall "Jack" Ford (May 18, 1947 – March 21, 2015) was an AmericanDemocratic politician who served as the mayor of Toledo, Ohio, from January 2002 to January 2006. Ford was Toledo's first African-American mayor.
Biography
[edit]A graduate of Ohio State University, Ford received his master's degree in public administration and his law degree from the University of Toledo. He spent most of his working life as an educator, teaching primarily at the University of Toledo for 22
