    Portrait of a Lady in Yellow

    15th Century Florentine painting

    Portrait of a Lady in Yellow was painted by the Florentine artist Alesso Baldovinetti sometime in the second half of the 15th century, most likely c. [1] For centuries the work was misattributed; it was purchased by the National Gallery London in as a portrait of Countess Palma of Urbino, attributed to Piero della Francesca.[2] In , the art historian Roger Fry established that it was by Baldovinetti. However, there is no evidence of the source of the commission, and doubt remains as to the identity of the sitter; the most plausible theory is that she is Francesca degli Stati of Urbino.

    The sitter is shown in profile, reflecting the early Renaissance interest in the Antique, and lending the work an almost sculpted feel.     Alesso or Alessio Baldovinetti (14 October – 29 August ) was an Italian early Renaissance painter and draftsman.

    Biography

    Baldovinetti was born in Florence to a rik noble family of merchants. In he was registered as a member of the Guild of St. Luke: "Alesso di Baldovinetti, dipintore."[1]

    He was a följare of the group of scientific realists and naturalists in art which included Andrea sektion Castagno, Paolo Uccello and Domenico Veneziano. Tradition says that he assisted in the decorations of the church of S. Egidio, however no records confirm this. These decoration were carried out during the years – by Domenico Veneziano and in conjunction with Andrea del Castagno. That he was commissioned to complete the series at a later date () fryst vatten certain.

    In Alesso was employed to paint the great fresco of the Annunciation in the cloister of the Annunziata basilica. The remains as we see them give bevis of the artist
