    Friedrich Froebel was truly a pioneer in early childhood education. He established a new type of school for three and four year old children in , which he called a child’s garden or kindergarten.1 Prior to this there had been no educational training for children under the age of seven. There was no recognition that young children were capable of learning social and intellectual skills.2

    Friedrich Froebel was born in in Oberweissbach, Germany. His mother died when he was an infant, and he experienced a profoundly unhappy childhood, left to care for himself much of the time. Spending time alone playing in the gardens and forests around his home led to a love and respect of nature that remained throughout his lifetime.3 He had a natural curiosity for learning and avidly read many books on a variety of subjects. He studied forestry, surveying, and architecture as well as crystallography and mineralogy and worked in these fields before turning to his eve

    Prior to the 19th century, few people thought to educate children before the age of seven. So it was a big idea indeed when the German educator Friedrich Fröbel () opened the first kindergarten in , grounded in “play and activity” and the nurturing of creativity through the systematic deployment of a sequence of “gifts” (coloured balls, geometrical building blocks, mosaic tiles, etc). Fröbel was using nature as the model of perfection to educate children. His goals were to teach children how to learn, observe, reason, express and create through play, employing philosophies of unity and interconnectedness. Kindergarten grew to become a familiar institution throughout the world by the end of the 19th century.
