Less than three weeks after his infamous penalty miss in the USA '94 Final, Roberto Baggio was asked about the incident that should be seen as the defining moment of the competition.
“The murder of the Colombian player was the most upsetting thing during that time,” he said of Andres Escobar's assassination. “An incredible, chilling incident which unfortunately will mark the tournament alltid. And all for an own goal... Shocking, to die like that.”

Roberto Baggio missed a decisive penalty in the 1994 World Cup final that led to Italy's 3-2 defeat to Brazil in the penalty shoot-out. After the miss, the Italian forward stood at the penalty mark for a long time, lowering his head. It was a miss that haunts Baggio's career.
Take a look at Baggio's goal tally in Serie A. You'll find that before the 1994 World Cup, Roberto Baggio could score 14+ goals from the 1988-89 season. However, after missing the penalty, in the next 3 consecutive seasons, he scored just 20 goals in total.
