Law, property, society and the state government (some naive thoughts and questions)
A while back, in a context I cant exactly remember, I made the point, which seemed to me to be obvious, that all property rights are derived from governments, and so its impossible to sustain a claim that government interference with property rights is inherently wrong. It rapidly became apparent that this point is controversial in all sorts of ways, so I thought it might be worthwhile to work out where the main lines of disagreement run.
The great thing about a blog like CT is that, on (almost) any topic, lots of my co-bloggers and readers know more than I do, and most arent shy about saying so. So, please point me to the relevant literature (about my only reference point here is James C Scott).
Ill with the classic approach of defining my terms.
* Property is a right of control over and use of objects (and, in slave societies, other people) recognised as lawful in a given society

Just passed the 13, word mark on my current book about Machiavelli and municipal politics, this weekend. So far, I have gone through explanations of Chapters of The Prince. The Prince has 26 chapters, so Im about 40% of the way through my analysis, more or less on track for a 35,, word book.
Its a little tough in places ansträngande to passform Machiavellis words and ideas to modern issues and themes, but so far I think Ive done a fair job of finding betydelsefull metaphors, issues and events. The next chapter, on ecclesiastical states, might be a bit of a stretch, since their relevance today fryst vatten minimal, so I suspect Ill need to conflate a couple of chapters here.
